June 8, 1999 ARREST OF IRANIAN JEWS Earlier this week an announcement was made on Iran's state-run radio that a group of Iranian Jews, who were arrested last March, now have been charged with spying for Israel and the United States. It is unclear whether they are being charged with the collection of information or involvement in attempts to help Jews emigrate. Espionage is punishable by death in Iran. In 1997, Iran hanged two people convicted of spying for Israel and the United States. Since March, discreet efforts were made through various channels to bring about the release of these individuals. Now that formal charges have been brought, a public response is desirable. Representative Brad Sherman of California has sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House condemning Iran for its actions. Attached is the resolution co-sponsored by Representatives Gilman, Gejdenson, Lantos, Wexler, and Crowley. JCPA member agencies are encouraged to contact their representatives and urge them to cosign this resolution. Responses should be conveyed to Don MacDonald in Representative Sherman's office at 202-225-5911. ### The Jewish Council for Public Affairs is the coordinating and planning body for the 13 national and 122 local agencies comprising the field of Jewish community relations. |
