Celebrating New Americans, JCPA Highlights Contributions of New Americans in Honor of Jewish American Heritage Month
Washington – The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) is commemorating the 10th annual Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) by promoting the theme “Celebrating New Americans.” JAHM is celebrated annually during the month of May. Throughout the month, JCPA will be highlighting stories of people from all backgrounds and ages who came to the United States looking for a new world to build their futures. Some came with nothing more than the shirts on their backs, some landing at Ellis Island or through the ports of New York or Galveston and others through a bustling airport terminal, but they all shared a hope for a better future for themselves and their families. These stories represent not just new Americans, but, in fact, the quintessential American story.
“Jewish American Heritage Month provides us with a time to reflect on our roots, our families and our proud heritage as Americans. Some of us arrived in massive numbers in the late 1800’s into the early 20th Century from Europe or from North Africa and the Middle East, others through the ashes of the Holocaust, and others arriving from the Former Soviet Union in more recent years. But all of us, our parents, and grandparents came here seeking a better future,” said Susan W. Turnbull, JCPA Chair.
“Despite the challenges, we joyfully mark this month to commemorate all the contributions and accomplishments that we as a people have achieved in our great nation. Our hope is to continue in our tradition of Tikun Olam (repairing the world), and work together with new Americans from all backgrounds, faiths and identities and celebrate our stories and the United States of America,” said Rabbi Steve Gutow, JCPA President.
In an email sent to local Jewish Community Relations Councils (member agencies of the JCPA), organizers were asked to contribute stories as part of this project, and to tweet pictures with the #NewAmericans for Jewish American Heritage Month #JAHM.
