Founded
in 1993, the Coalition
on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) engages
Jewish institutions and individuals in bringing the moral
passion of Jewish tradition and social action to environmental
stewardship—in order to preserve the integrity of creation,
advance social justice, protect future generations, and
strengthen the Jewish community.
COEJL
embraces 28
national Jewish organizations across the spectrum
of Jewish religious and communal life. COEJL is the Jewish
member of the National
Religious Partnership for the Environment, which also
includes the Evangelical
Environmental Network, the National
Council of Churches, and the U.S.
Catholic Conference.
Housed
at the JCPA office in New York, COEJL maintains a close
partnership with the JCPA. COEJL’s public policy positions
are based directly upon the policies of the JCPA, and
COEJL’s director staffs the JCPA Committee on Energy and
the Environment. In addition to policy development and
advocacy, COEJL sponsors regional
affiliates in communities across North America, publishes
a wide array of program materials on Judaism and the environment,
and organizes the annual Mark and Sharon Bloome Jewish
Environmental Leadership Training Institute — held in
conjunction with the JCPA Plenum and Hillel Spitzer Forum
in alternate years.
