JCPA condemns Dusseldorf bombing

Concerned by atmosphere that tolerates hate

August 2, 2000 – New York, NY – The Jewish Council for Public Affairs is alarmed by violence in Germany, apparently perpetrated by neo-Nazi groups. The most recent incidents culminated last week with a bombing in Dusseldorf that injured ten people, including six Jewish immigrants from the Former Soviet Union. The JCPA is horrified by the bombing and calls on German authorities to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators of these despicable crimes to justice.

JCPA Chair Leonard A. Cole warned against the danger of silence in the face of hate. "That racist and anti-Semitic thugs are terrorizing people in Germany should disgust decent people everywhere. We are heartened that German government officials have spoken out against the violence, but we are distressed that many Germans seem to be silent in the face of these vicious acts. Germany must take immediate steps to ensure an end to such violence, and to foster a society that does not tolerate hate."
