Jewish Public Affairs Arm Hails Bush for Backing Food Stamps for Legal ImmigrantsNEW YORK, Jan. 10 – The Jewish Council for Public Affairs today praised President Bush for his initiative to restore food stamps for many legal immigrants. "There has long been concern that deficiencies in the 1996 welfare reform law left many people vulnerable, including legal immigrants who have not yet become citizens. President Bush deserves much credit for his leadership in efforts to treat these future Americans with compassion," said Leonard A. Cole, chair of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. "We urge the Senate and House of Representatives to expedite the President's proposal so that more than 360,000 legal immigrants can once again be eligible for food stamps." ### JCPA is the public affairs arm of the organized Jewish community that serves as the national coordinating and advisory body for the 13 national and 123 local agencies comprising the field of Jewish community relations. |
