FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Office of Public Information JEWISH COUNCIL FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS CALLS FOR WORLDWIDE COOPERATION IN URGING THE IRANIAN GOVERNMENT TO IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE 13 FALSELY ACCUSED IRANIAN JEWS JCPA Releases Statement and Stresses Urgent Action San Francisco, CA -- June 14, 1999-- At their Board of Directors meeting today, the New York-based Jewish Council for Public Affairs issued a statement calling for all people of good will, including religious, human rights and political leaders to join with them in calling upon the Iranian government to immediately release the group of Jews who are being falsely accused of spying for Israel and the United States. This is a charge that carries the death sentence in Iran. Leaders of the JCPA emphasized the need for immediate action as the 13 Iranian Jews may be brought to trial as early as this week. These Jews, imprisoned for almost three months, include rabbis, Hebrew teachers and Jewish community officials in Isfahan and Shiraz. Their only "crime" is that they have contributed to the maintenance of Jewish life in those locations. ### The Jewish Council for Public Affairs is the public affairs body of the organized Jewish community and serves as the national coordinating and advisory body for the 13 national and 122 community agencies which comprise the field of Jewish community relations. |
