Jewish Council for Public Affairs Names New Chair
Dr. Leonard Cole Elected to Two Year Term

Baltimore, MD – March 1, 2000 – The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) today elected a new chair for the years 2000-2002. Dr. Leonard Cole was nominated in October, 1999, and unanimously approved to the 2-year position today, at the closing day of the JCPA annual plenum. Dr. Cole succeeds Steven Schwarz as Chair.

Leonard Cole has long been involved in Jewish community relations. He has served on various committees of the JCPA, including the Task Force on Israel and Other International Concerns, the Committee on Race, Ethnicity and Public Policy, the Israel Strategy Committee, the Committee on Arms Control and the Campus Advisory Committee. Dr. Cole also serves on various bodies of the United Jewish Communities, including the Israel and Overseas Pillar, the Committee on National Funding Councils, the Committee on Social Security and the Social Public Policy Steering Committee.

In addition to his community service, Dr. Cole is an acknowledged expert on biological and chemical warfare policy, and is the author of several books on the subject. Dr. Cole’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Scientific American and other publications.

Outgoing JCPA Chair, Steven Schwarz welcomed Cole’s election. "While I am of course saddened to leave the Chairmanship of the JCPA, I have enjoyed my tenure as chair, and look forward to my continued involvement in the agency. Dr. Cole is a wonderful choice for the position, and I look forward to working with him in the future."

"Len Cole’s myriad experience and varied interests will be an asset to the JCPA during his tenure," said past JCPA chair Michael Newmark, who chaired the nominating committee. "I am sure that his leadership will provide many insights and a fresh vision to the organization."

As Chair of the JCPA, Dr. Cole will be the public voice of the organization and provide lay leadership for the 56-year-old national umbrella group.
