This Week at JCPA: Agency gears up for pope’s visit to Israel; President Gets Race Report; Union Leader Praises Agency

March 16, 2000 – New York – In preparation for Pope John Paul II upcoming trip to Israel, the JCPA, in cooperation with the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, prepared information packets on the history of Catholic-Jewish relations, and the Vatican’s relationship with Israel. President Clinton thanked Jewish Council for Public Affairs Chair Dr. Leonard Cole for presenting him with a copy of Building One Nation: Race, Ethnicity, and Public Policy at a White House meeting for faith-based leadership on the President's race initiative. The report, a blueprint for Jewish communal engagement in the ongoing effort to assure an open and just society for all Americans, was adopted at JPCA’s plenum 2000 in Baltimore…

At the annual dinner of the Jewish Labor Committee, AFL-CIO International President John Sweeney praised the JCPA for its support of the living wage principle. "I want to personally thank. . .the Jewish Council for Public Affairs for your resolution in favor of living wage ordinances," Sweeney said. "We in the union movement are delighted to have you working side by side with us…" A resolution in support of living wage proposals was passed unanimously at JCPA’s plenum 2000.
