JEWISH COUNCIL FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS
DENOUNCES MURDER OF 14 SERBIAN FARMERS;
CALLS FOR EXPEDITIOUS INVESTIGATION

July 26, 1999 - New York, NY - In a statement released today, Steve Schwarz, chair of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), deplored the brutal massacre of fourteen Serb farmers that took place in Kosovo last Friday night. The full text of Schwarz's statement follows:

"The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) deplores the massacre of Serb farmers that occurred in Kosovo Friday night. We understand the deep anger and pain felt by ethnic Albanians in light of the massive atrocities committed against them by Serb forces. However, nothing justifies the taking of innocent life. Such violence only serves to undermine the effort to restore peaceful conditions to this region.

The JCPA calls upon NATO forces to undertake a thorough investigation of the crime and to swiftly prosecute the perpetrators. We believe that all civilians in Kosovo - Albanians and Serbs alike - deserve to pursue their lives without fear."
