Crisis in Burma: Tell Congress to Protect the Rohingya People

Background

Since August 2017, the Burmese military has engaged in a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya people of Burma (Myanmar), killing thousands and forcing over 688,000 others to flee their homes and make the perilous journey to Bangladesh’s refugee camps.

It is critical that Congress condemn the ethnic cleansing and mandate strong economic sanctions and humanitarian assistance as a crucial first step in stemming the violence. Passing the Burma Human Rights and Freedom Act, which was approved unanimously by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would send a powerful message to the Burmese military and the global community that the United States will not be silent or inactive in the face of mass atrocities.
